Along the coast of the western United States, the Brown Pelican (Pelecanus occidentalis) is a ubiquitous feature. They seem to glide effortlessly along the surface of the water, and watching them hunt for fish has always been very entertaining to me. During the 1970s, they were virtually eliminated due to poisoning from pesticides like DDT, but now are very stable. These images were captured at Bolsa Chica wetlands near Huntington Beach, California, or in La Jolla, California.
