The desert tortoise (Gopherus agassizii) is ubiquitous in the Mojave and Sonoran deserts but despite being widespread, it is always a treat for visitors to see. Desert tortoises spend 95% of their life underground but can most easily be seen after springtime or autumn rains. They are particularly sensitive to habitat destruction, and much of their most rich habitat is being threatened by wind and solar development.
