The UPS man brought me a new toy today.
I began taking photographs as a graduate student, when the budget was a bit tight. Since I’ve had a ‘real’ job, I’ve been slowly replacing my gear. First, I replaced the Canon 10D body, which was on loan from one of my graduate committee members, and have been replacing my lenses over the last year and a half. Today I replaced my Canon 18-55 lens with a brand new EF 24-105/4L IS USM.
I had previously borrowed or rented this lens and gotten some great images from it (below), so I’m very excited to finally own it, and to take it on my upcoming Sierra trip this weekend.

Moqui marbles, Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument, August 2009
That is definitely a big upgrade in lens, sounds exciting. That 2nd image is fascinating. I’d like to visit that location at some point.
I love mine. Some people diss it, I’m not sure why. The only limitation I’ve found is it lacks great depth of field, even at f/22 & 24 mm. When I have foreground a few feet away and a distant background, I avoid the lens. It’s a fantastic street lens and the AF is so darn fast! You already know this though. Enjoy it!
Thank you for commenting, Michael! I do love the lens, and until you commented, I hadn’t realized I have had the lens this long!
Have you tried focus stacking for the scenario you mentioned? It’s a great tool to have in your digital processing toolkit. It probably wouldn’t work for street photography but for static landscapes it works well.
