Photo of the cadiz valley sand dunes late in the day; alternating dark and light layers show the peaks and valleys of the dunes

The Cadiz Dunes are an expansive dune field in a remote part of the Mojave Desert in southern California; here layers are created as the sun begins to set. The Cadiz Dunes Wilderness is part of Mojave Trails National Monument, which encompasses parts of the Cadiz Valley, Sheephole Mountains, and Sheephole Valley, protecting valuable Mojave Desert resources.

The Cadiz Valley is also the site of the proposed and folly-ridden Cadiz Water Project, which would pump groundwater from the Valley to the Colorado River Aqueduct 43 miles to the south. You can read more about this project and my visit to the Cadiz Dunes on my blog here.
